With winter approaching, we are all thinking about sitting in a comfortable chair with a blanket in front of a fireplace. If you live in Chicago, and are building a house or renovating it, choosing the right fireplace as the focal point of your living room / family room is essential. Because it is such an important piece, you'll usually want to place art just above it (TV's are not the prettiest thing to accentuate on that wall, although you might not have a choice).
Look around the room, and determine if the architecture has moldings or paneling in the room. Look at the shape of your windows in the room (do they have a lot of detail, or are they industrial, rustic, etc...?)
Last but not least, determined whether or not your furniture contracts with the architectural style, or if you are keeping it consistent. If you have a traditional space with modern furniture in the room, you actually have some leverage selecting almost any fireplace style! Mix, Match, and have Fun!
Select your fireplace accordingly! Here are some examples of fireplaces that relate perfectly to what is going on in the space.
